Safety Considerations When Combining Supplements and Medicines

'Natural' doesn't mean safe with every medicine. Some supplement–drug combinations are dangerous.

Why interactions happen

Supplements can change how your body absorbs or processes medicines, making them stronger or weaker.

A high-risk example

Products with hidden PDE-5 inhibitor drugs, found by the FDA in some sexual enhancement supplements, can cause dangerous blood-pressure drops with nitrate heart medicines.

Staying safe

  • Tell every doctor and pharmacist about all supplements you take
  • Use one pharmacy where possible
  • Look up herbs on MedlinePlus before use
